Reprezentanţii Google, compania care deţine site-ul YouTube, au afirmat în mai multe rânduri că vor să transforme YouTube dintr-un site pe care utilizatorii pot încărca diverse materiale video, într-unul care să ofere conţinut premium. De asemenea, Google doreşte ca utilizatorii să petreacă cât mai mult timp pe site, iar acest obiectiv pare a fi îndeplinit, în prezent pe YouTube fiind disponibile mai mult de 70 de filme întregi care pot fi vizionate.

YouTube a depăşit anul acesta pragul de trei miliarde de vizualizări, o creştere de 50%, în comparaţie cu anul trecut.  Acest lucru înseamnă că jumătate din populaţia lumii se uită la un clip pe YouTube în fiecare zi. În fiecare secundă, 10 % din tot traficul de pe Internet este generat de acest site.
